Deportation of 17 Bangladeshi nationals postponed

Authorities on Monday failed to deport 17 Bangladeshi nationals who had been detained in Silchar Central Jail for the past few years. Following a procedure, the Bangladeshi citizens were brought out of the detention camp but, in a last-minute twist, the process was postponed. Sources said the approval of the Union home ministry had not reached the officials here. APW claims 48 lakh illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam

The Assam Public Works (APW) on Thursday claimed that there are 48 lakh illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the State.  Addressing a press conference, APW president Abhijit Sarma slammed ministers Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta for failing to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people of Assam. Sarma also demanded Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta to resign from the ministry. He also attacked the AASU for withdrawing a case from Supreme Court which was related to the illegal foreigners’ issue. 10 Bangladeshi infiltrators who were lodged at a jail in Cachar, were sent back to their country on Thursday. The intruders were repatriated through the Indo-Bangladesh border at Karimganj.
