In a recent development in the matter concerning an Special Leave Petition filed against the Gauhati High Court’s order invalidating panchayat certificates submitted by applicants to enroll their names in NRC, The NRC authorities on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that 17.40 lakh out of 47.09 lakh people who had submitted panchayat certificates as proof of citizenship to enroll their names in the updated NRC, are original residents of Assam. This was stated in a report submitted by State Coordinator for NRC Prateek Hajela.

On Thursday, an intervention petition filed by the Assam Congress was rejected by a division bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi and including Naveen Sinha. Through the petition, the party wanted to intervene in the case which challenged the Gauhati High Court order refusing the validity of the Panchayat certificates issued as proof of citizenship for NRC.

The Supreme Court said it would take up the matter in its next hearing on November 15.
