In a shocking incident, A journalist working for News18 Assam-North East was reportedly beaten up by the Assam Police near the Mizoram-Assam border on Saturday.

The journalist Emmy C Lawbei sustained severe injuries. She was instantly rushed to Bairabi Hospital for initial treatment.

According to Emmy C Lawbei, members of a Mizo students’ body clashed with the Assam Police at a time when she was busy reporting.

Journalist Lawbei took the issue to social media. She wrote,”We are Journalists who came to do ground reporting, we were unarmed, our only weapon was camera, pen, and notepad, yet you beat us black and blue and you fired shots at us.”

“I am so mad at your ignorance and aggressive behavior towards us. Stop assaulting Press. It is high time Assam and Mizoram government settle this dispute and stop spilling blood,” she added.

In a Facebook post she wrote, “I was travelling from Aizawl at 6 am along with other reporters. All the journalists were ahead of the students. There was some verbal exchange followed by lathi charge. Police started chasing us, beating everyone on the way.”

“Police also opened fire and I was so scared, I started running back towards the car. I saw my other female journalist running towards the car and I followed her. Police keep chasing, screaming and beating us. No matter how many times I shouted I’m a journalist, they turned a deaf ear. I also saw another reporter getting hit on his head, he lost his glasses and ran towards safe area. Another Reporter from Kolasib also got injured. I ran as fast as I could and got into the first car I saw,” she further added.

On March 7, The Assam administration reportedly clamped prohibitory orders under section 144, CrPc with instant effect in Hailakandi district (Assam), bordering Mizoram, apprehending encroachment attempts from the other side, News 18 reported.
